BACK COUNTRY STREAMS

Turning Stones Fly Fishing, LLC also guides on many, local back country streams for Wild Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brook Trout. These streams are relatively close quarters as far as flyfishing goes. Many of these streams require a good hike in over rough terrain. Recommended for the more hearty angler but will accommodate anyone who really wants to experience the wilds of Western North Carolina. These are some of the most beautiful fish you will see anywhere in world!

If you're looking for Big Fish this trip is not for you. Most fish run 12 inches and under. (Streams not named to help preserve the true, wild nature of their setting.)

Streams We Fish

NANTAHALA RIVER

The Nantahala River in Macon County, NC, is a beautiful mountain stream of medium size set in the Nantahala Gorge. This river is an excellent class room for the beginner fly fisherman. Under delayed harvest regulations, the Nantahala is catch and release from the beginning of October through the first of June.

Stocking of the Nantahala River occurs in five months (October, November, March, April & May). This river is teaming with trout, some well over 20 inches waiting to battle with the fly angler.

TUCKASEGEE RIVER

The Tuckasegee is a tailwater in Western North Carolina just outside of the towns of Sylva & Dillsboro in Jackson County. This river is also an excellent classroom for the beginner fly fisherman. The Tuck recieves almost 50,000 trout from October - June with numerous 20 plus inch fish mixed in. While fishing The Tuck you truly have a chance to catch a trophy sized trout.

SNOWBIRD CREEK

Snowbird, just outside of Robbinsville, NC, is truly an amazing fishery with native Brookies in the high country and winter spawning runs of Steelhead out of Lake Santeetlah. Snowbird has plenty of hold over fish from stockings as well as beautiful, wild Rainbows.

The lower reaches of Snowbird receive stockings in March and throughout the summer. So if you want a chance at a trophy Steelhead this is the place to find them. Steelhead fishing is recommended for more advanced fly fisherman.

CULLASAJA RIVER

The Cullasaja River flows from near the Town of Highlands, North Carolina. This stream is hatchery supported, therefore closed during the month of March. The river flows through the Cullasaja Gorge and meets the Little Tennessee River near Franklin, North Carolina.

This stream has easy roadside access for the angler that doesn't necessarily want to walk the back country of Western North Carolina. The stream is beautiful with numerous waterfalls along its trek through the gorge and provides for breathtaking views of the mountains. The fishing's not bad either!
