(10/30/08) The fly fishing on the delayed harvest this fall has been very good. I have been on the Nantahala and Tuckaseegee Rivers a lot this month and the fishing has been great!

They will be stocking both streams again around the first of November as if there wasn't enough catching going on already!

If you plan to fish these rivers on your own, fish nymphs sizes 14 through 18 and you will do just fine. Just remember the key to doing just fine means you need to have a good, clean, drag-free drift in most cases. Remember, you want the bugs to float naturally downstream to the fish. You will be happy if its done correctly.

Private Instruction

Whether you've never seen a fly rod or have been fishing for years I look forward to sharing my knowledge of fly fishing with you. I offer one-on-one instruction at reasonable rates. Once completed, my goal is to have you completely confident to be on the area's streams by yourself.

Raven Fork/Ocunaluftee River

This river flows directly out of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and was already a good fishery prior to the new catch and release fly fishing only program. The 2.2 mile stretch is just full of fish, some absolute monsters too! The fishing started out too easy but recently after more pressure has settled in to fish more like a fly fishing only section should. Fish catch rates have been very good with big fish mixed in. This is an absolute must for a fly fisherman who likes to have a chance at giant fish.

The Raven Fork of the Ocunaluftee River on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Western North Carolina has opened up 2.2 miles of FLY FISHING ONLY, catch and release trophy water.

The Raven Fork is an absolutely beautiful river flowing out of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with crystal clear water flowing over boulders, what else could you ask for? Cost will be a $20 for an annual permit and $7 a day per person (plus regular guide fee). That's it! Are you kidding me??

I have already taken lots of trips on this river. This fishing has been nothing short of spectacular! (Lots of BIG Fish) Kudos to Robert Blankenship for setting this all in motion. Looking forward to guiding you on this incredible stretch of river.
P.S. A camera is a must!

The most exciting time of the year to fly fish is finally here! The delayed harvest streams opened up October 1st and the fishing has been nothing short of spectacular.

I've been on the Tuckasegee River the past five days and lost count in the amount of fish caught by 10 o'clock. The "Tuck" and the Nantahala have both been stocked with numerous fish; Browns, Rainbows, and Brookies alike.

4% of these fish stocked are trophy sized fish 20" or better. This is a great to experience the flyfishing here in the Western North Carolina Mountains.
