"This was one of the most meorable fishing trips I have ever been on. Gordon was a great guide and really knew his stuff. He always seemed to have the right fly and the right advice for every situation. I look foward to fishing with him again in the future."
-M. Ledford , Franklin, NC
"I would have to say that my trip to the Great Smoky Mountains was by far the greatest fishing trip I have ever been on. Gordon you were excellent in showing us every aspect of the wonderful sport of fly fishing. From very patiently teaching us how to cast, to showing us how to actually catch some fish. That's an understatement, "WE KILLED 'EM." Thanks for everything. You got me hooked. I can't wait untill we can come back. Wish I could have got that big brown in, oh well he'll be there next time.
Luv Ya!!!"

Hello everyone and welcome to Turning Stones Fly Fishing, LLC. My name is Gordon Vanderpool and I have been fly fishing streams in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina for many years along with numerous others from here in Franklin, North Carolina to northern Pennsylvania; Steelhead fishing in the Lake Erie tributaries to Native Brookies here in the Smokies on streams like Big Snowbird Creek just outside of Robbinsville, NC.
I spend a lot of time guiding on the Tuckasegee and Nantahala Rivers. Both streams are under delayed harvest regulations and are excellent classrooms for anyone wanting to learn to Flyfish. I also guide on the Cullasaja River which flows from the Town of Highlands, NC down through the Cullasaja Gorge and into the Little Tennessee River. This is just a small taste of my flyfishing experience over the years.
I would love to share my extensive knowledge with anyone willing to take that first step into this wonderful sport. Start your fly fishing journey with Turning Stones Fly Fishing, LLC here in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY:
This was an amazing trip! You can't ask for a better guide. Gordon is extremely knowledgeable and very patient. I definitely tested Gordon with some of the tangles I got into. I have never learned so much in one day nor have I caught so many fish in one day than I did with Gordon. There are a lot of good knowledgeable guides out there but when you find a guide who is extremely knowledgeable and can teach it to you, and you still feel like you are out there fishing with one of your ol' fishing buddies...that's a great guide. And that is Gordon. I am already making plans for another trip. If anyone out there is looking for great fishing trip, this is it!
- Chris Beckman, South Carolina
"I have been on a few guided fly fishing trips in the past but none more
enjoyable than our day on the Nantahala River with Gordon. With his
knowledge and patience we landed over 25 beautiful Trout each.
We had such a great day and learned so much that we are already
planning our next trip with Gordon for later this year."
S. Stratman - Seneca, SC
My friend and I booked a trout fishing trip through the Highland Hiker Outfitters in Highlands , N.C. They hooked us up with a guide named Gordon Vanderpool. He met us at the time and place scheduled and drove us to the river, furnished all equipment and included lunch. The river looked like chocolate milk from the rain the night before and our hopes of catching trout were dashed. Gordon not only saved the day with his expertise but enabled us to catch some “Monster” trout. He knows his “bugs”, can read the water like a book and turned a fishing trip into an exiting and educational experience we will remember for years. Gordon has the patience of Job, is an excellent teacher, and possesses an extraordinary personality and sense of humor to match. We felt like we had known him for years. If you are looking for a “ Montana ” class fishing adventure in your own backyard, I highly recommend Highlands , N.C. and Gordon Vanderpool, a “Five Star Guide” and a new friend. P.S.: We will be back!

Jim and I greatly enjoyed the trout fishing trip, the beautiful mountains, streams and your professionalism. I have engaged other fishing guides but you by far were the best; you are very professional, great personality, you knew the streams and the holes where the trout would be; you demonstrated your knowledge of the flies, the hatches and what would attract the trout under the water as well. Your instructions were professional and I did learn from your instructions; you showed an interest in improving my amateur fishing techniques. Safety was a core value of your guide services which was important to me. I will always remember the large number of the "catch and release" trout I caught and especially the excitement of playing the large ones.
I will be contacting you soon for another fantastic guided trout fishing trip.
